After nearly two decades of No Child Left Behind influence in education, educators are realizing that there is one large demographic group that has been grossly left behind: boys. Here are some of the facts:

  • Boys are 2-3 times more likely to be placed in special education classes than girls.
  • Boys make up 80% of disciplinary referrals.
  • Boys are 4-5 times more likely to be expelled from preschool.
  • Boys are 30% more likely to drop out of school than girls.
  • More boys enroll in kindergarten, but fewer boys graduate from high school.
  • Nearly 80% of students expelled from schools are boys.

Some attribute this growing divide to learning environments and strategies structured to favor girls’ learning styles. Teachers and administrators alike report that boys are too fidgety, too hyperactive and too disruptive, often derailing the educational process for everyone while sabotaging their own intellectual development. Glance into most American classrooms and you will see desks in rows, teachers pleading with students to stay in their seats and refrain from talking to their neighbors. Positive reinforcement for good behavior is focused on students who are proficient at sitting still for long periods of time, a skill that many boys haven’t mastered.

Educators sometimes pass off disruptive behaviors as “boys will be boys,” but too often fail to remember that “boys will learn like boys.” If the educational system continues to punish boys for being boys in the classroom, discipline referrals and drop-out rates for boys are likely to continue to soar.

About the Presenter
Stephanie Jensen, MS, LPC is an award winning author and international speaker recognized for her insight and understanding of child development, learning and school culture. She combines fifteen years of practice in the fields of education and counseling with research, practical strategies and a bit of humor to address challenging behaviors and to build positive relationships with students of all ages. She has held positions as classroom teacher, reading specialist and as an education consultant with Boys Town. She holds a master’s degree in clinical counseling, focusing her efforts on adolescent and family issues. In recent years Stephanie has applied her passion for adolescents to focus on the dynamics of relational aggression, social-emotional learning, and positive behavior interventions.
